Abstract
Optic disc hemorrhage has been recognized as one of the most important risk factor for the development and progression of glaucoma. Disc hemorrhages occur most commonly in the superotemporal and inferotemporal area of the optic disc margin, which are associated with the functional and structural changes in glaucoma. Despite the significance of disc hemorrhage in glaucoma is well-known, the mechanism of disc hemorrhage is uncertain. However, with the technical advancement of optical coherence tomography, many researchers are investigating the pathogenesis of disc hemorrhage. Currently, the mechanical and vascular theories are two main leading theories that have been proposed as the pathogenesis of disc hemorrhage. This review article concerns the recent findings of disc hemorrhage pathogenesis and determines the clinical significance of disc hemorrhage in glaucoma patients.
